BOREA 80 LED:
Is a perfect low cost cooling fan for aquariums with a connected automatic temperature control system and LED for moonlight / actinic lighting. It has a connected accurate probe for detecting the water temperature. The radial fan can be swivelled or turned and adjusted to 5 different speeds to adapt it to multiple situations of tank sizes and desired temperatures. Once the temperature has been set, the fan will operate autonomously, switching on and off when temperature is reached. Water temperature can also be at any time on the display. Operation and setting are extremely simple: the display screen constantly shows the temperature value detected by the probe. When the temperature detected by the probe is more or equal to the temperature to be kept set, the fan starts operating (at the set speed). When the temperature detected by the probe is lower than the set temperature, the fan stops working.
FAN SPEED SETTING: pressing the “-” key for 3 seconds will show the fan speed set on the display. At this point, short press “-” to decrease the fan speed, or “+” to increase the fan speed. When no operation is performed for 6 seconds, a “9” appears on the display and the set speed is memorized.
TEMPERATURE SETTING TO BE MAINTAINED: pressing the “+” key for 3 seconds, the currently set temperature value will be shown on the display. At this point briefly press “-” or “+” to reduce or increase the temperature to be maintained. When no operation is performed for 6 seconds, a “9” appears on the display and the set speed is memorized..
MOON LED SETTING: press the “LED” button to adjust the brightness of the moon LED. When no operation is performed for 2 seconds, the set brightness is stored. The LED has a maximum power of 4.5 watts. The supplied acrylic support allows it to be installed on edges up to 12 mm thick.
The probe can be easily replaced in the event of a malfunction.
For aquariums from 15 to 80 litres suitable for use in both freshwater and seawater aquariums.
AMTRA has designed its own fan for aquariums with moonlight named Borea 80 LED. We received it and we have been using it for 4 weeks now, so today we’re going to give our findings on it.
The problem of temperature regulation in aquariums is one of the bigger issues that an aquarist has to face. Especially at warmer times of the year. Bigger aquariums benefit greatly from a chiller, but are expensive making it un-affordable for smaller aquariums but for the smaller ones a fan is often enough.
The fan decreases the temperature by increasing the evaporation of water from the aquarium. For this reason, the air stream should be directed across the surface of the water rather than directly at it. This allows for great gas exchange and temperatures to lower much quicker. In order to resolve the problem of fans directly aimed at the surface they designed the Borea 80 LED, with an 8 cm directional fan with an integrated thermostat in which there are also blue LEDs with moonlight function.
Borea 80 LED
The 80 mm directional fan is connected to the central body with a liquid crystal display and three buttons. With sockets to plug in the temperature probe. Beneath the fan are the blue LEDs that can be adjusted between 5 values of different intensity to meet the different needs of the user. The fan has to be fixed to the tank rim with an acrylic bracket. The bracket is locked into place on the rim or glass by screws and it can be inserted onto glass up to 12 mm.
We fitted the unit in a 80 litre aquarium, to which we had increased its temperature to 29 degrees C. In a few hours, the temperature has been brought to 27 degrees C. So we were surprised at the speed it lowered the temp. The fan was quiet also and the accuracy was good as it shut down as soon as our set temp of 27 degrees C was reached.
The rotation of the fan can be set on 5 different levels depending on the type of aquarium to be cooled. The only noise coming from the fan is the moved air it is very silent! so our findings are the unit is of a very good overall quality.
The Lighting In the central part of the fan, which is the best place, there are the blue LEDs they have been put both in the central part and in the external ring. These LEDs also can adjusted set between 5 power levels. As a moonlight they are great or as an addition to an already present light we think they’re perfect.
How to set an Borea 80
- On the central body there are three buttons: minus, plus, and LED.
- If you press the minus button for three seconds you enter the configuration menu, and you can choose the level among the 5 available.
- If you press the plus button for three seconds you enter the temperature settings, where you can set the temperature the fan has to maintain.
- Once you’re in each menu, you use the buttons plus or minus.
- With the LED button you can set the LED power. You have 5 levels plus a level where the LEDs are turned off.
So our overall findings are.
Borea 80 is affordable. It's an honest price for an adjustable fan with thermostat included. We really liked the option to tilt it as we please.
Conclusions In fact, the fan doesn’t have a hysteresis break, so if you set it at 27 degrees, as we did, the fan will bring the aquarium to 27 degrees and then it will always turn on every time the temperature increases, even if just a tenth of degree. This leads to the fan to switching on and off very often. This is the only thing we have to report of a fan that we liked very much. Even considering the price, that we think it’s in line with the technical content and the results it gives. The construction is very good, the fan is pretty much silent, except for the moved air itself, obviously.
PROS Extremely silent fan - Adjustable fan Ease of regulation - 5 levels of power Very good construction Powerful LED that could also be a proper lighting for a small nano reef
